CONVERT POP TO IMAP IN MAC MAIL OSX (Mountain lion)

Helpful Hint!

Before you start you will need to have the password for your mail box which can be reset via your control panel if you do not know it! We keep your passwords encrypted for safety.

A Creating a Backup (Optional)

To ensure no important email is lost you may wish to create a backup.

NOTE : The steps below will only back up email on Macmail Any email which has been downloaded on another client or device will need backed up separately.

Start Mac Mail Highlight the mailbox you wish to back up select Mailbox>>Export Mailbox

Select Desktop and click Choose

B Removing Your POP Account

Before you can configure Macmail to IMAP you will need to remove your POP email account

NOTE : If you have not carried out steps 1-2 in section A, all contents of the mail box will be deleted!

Highlight the mailbox you wish to back up select Settings >EDIT

Select the Account to be removed and click -

Confirm you wish to remove the account by clicking Remove

Close the Accounts Window

C Adding Your IMAP Account

Use this section to add your IMAP email account.

Choose Add Account from the File Menu

Complete the details on the wizard that loads up, and click Continue

Full Name : Your Name
E-Mail Address : your.name@domain.com
Password: This is the password you associated with your mailbox in the control panel
Your Name
your.name@domain.com

Complete the incoming server Settings and click Continue

Incoming Server Information

Account Type : imap
Description : An Identifier for that account
Incoming Mail Server : imap.iomartmail.com
User Name : Your email address or the username configured in your CP.
Password : This is the password you associated with your mailbox in the control panel

Complete the Outgoing Server Information and click Continue

Outgoing Server Information

Description : An Identifier for that account
Outgoing Mail Server : smtp.iomartmail.com
Use Authentication : Yes
User Name : Your email address or the username configured in your CP.
Password : This is the password you associated with your mailbox in the control panel

You will then be presented with a summary screen, click Create

D Restoring Mail From Backup to Your Inbox

Once your email box is configured in Thunderbird  you can restore your backup to your inbox so your IMAP email is accessible on any client or device

Select File>>Import Mailboxes

Select Files in mbox format and click Continue

Navigate to your Desktop and select your backup (mbox) then click Choose

Click Done

Navigate your Restored mail, Select the emails you wish to back up (selected emails are highlighted in Blue)

  • You can select all emails by holding CTRL on your keyboard and pressing the A button
  • You can select individual emails by holding the CTRL button and clicking the selected emails with your mouse

Select Message >> Move To >> Inbox>> New Inbox

Confirm your mail has been moved to your new Inbox

Highlight the Import Folder, Select Mailbox>>Delete Mailbox

Confirm Deletion by clicking Delete

NOTE : ensure there is no mail in this folder or it will be permanently deleted
